Texas Women’s Basketball Commences Final Big 12 Journey with a Defeat Against Baylor
In a highly anticipated matchup, No. 5 Texas women’s basketball encountered a setback, falling 85-79 to No. 10 Baylor in their last Big 12 Conference opener. The clash marked the first loss for both teams this season.
Adding to the challenge, junior guard Rori Harmon revealed a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear just before the game. Despite the heartbreak, Harmon expressed her commitment to supporting the team and being the best teammate possible.
Facing adversity without Harmon and leading scorer senior forward Taylor Jones, Texas struggled initially. Baylor seized a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter, but a three-pointer from graduate guard Shaylee Gonzales initiated a 9-0 Texas run.
The second quarter witnessed a Texas resurgence, narrowing Baylor’s lead to one point at 28-27. Despite the momentum, Baylor’s Yaya Felder’s six points kept them ahead 37-31.
Navigating through a resilient Baylor defense, Texas maintained a balanced game in the following quarters. Although the once 13-point gap was reduced to six, Texas couldn’t overcome the early struggles, resulting in a home game loss.
Freshman forward Madison Booker, stepping into Harmon’s point guard role, achieved a career-high 25 points, showcasing adaptability amid challenging circumstances.
Despite the defeat, Texas exhibited improvement throughout the game, displaying resilience until the final seconds. The Longhorns will kick off 2024 against Texas Tech on Jan. 3 in Lubbock, with a rematch against Baylor scheduled for Feb. 1 in Waco.
